Every pet food brand on the market contains different ingredients but most

manufacturers stick to a ratio of 50% meat, 50% veggies, and a low grain mix in their food products to ensure pet health. Most manufacturers also add vitamins and minerals that follow the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) regulations for pet food. However, when you are choosing a good brand, we recommend you follow a few tips we’ve listed here: Identify the meat protein by reading the product labels – Look for food items that contain a large amount of high quality protein. Most pet food brands will contain meat, poultry and fish ingredients listed sequentially on the ingredient list but that is not enough. For example, a pet brand will list the first ingredient as chicken protein. This should be backed up with two or three more ingredients that also contain processed animal protein. That means the first three to five ingredients of a brand should contain animal protein in different form to ensure a concentrate mix of proteins for your pet. Look for brands with a low amount of vegetable protein – Meat-based protein is far better for your pet than any vegetable-based protein. That said, every animal requires some vegetables and grains. Grains also provide an excellent source of energy and nutrients for your pet. However, to ensure optimum absorption, the grains should be present in whole form. Ideal grains for your pet include barley, quinoa, millet, brown rice, rolled oats, etc. Ideally, we do not recommend making your dog a vegetarian, as dogs require proteins for healthy skin and bones. They may not thrive on a vegetarian diet. Only buy pet food brands that you would eat yourself – This rule may seem highly amusing to some people but it is true. You wouldn’t eat white bread, processed meats, high sugar or high salt items yourself as it would be highly dangerous to your health. The same thing applies to your pet too. Avoid food items that are high in sugar and salt and which contain a lot of white flour, processed meat, preservatives, and filler proteins. The bottom line You are the only person who can choose the best pet food for your pet. This is because every pet is unique and you are the only one who understands your pet and his unique likes and dislikes. Every pet has a different calorie requirement and that means you do have to find a pet food that will suit your pet’s unique digestion, lifestyle and breed. Yes, this might take some time but once you find the right balance of proteins, carbohydrates and fats for your pet; stick to it and you will see your pet’s health improve immediately
